Let’s get something out of the way first: I like AI. I use it. It can save time, help organize information, generate ideas, and even help people understand legal concepts.

But here’s my no-BS opinion: AI should never replace getting legal advice from a qualified California family law attorney.

I’ve already had people come into my office convinced they know exactly what the law is because ‘ChatGPT said so.’ Sometimes the information is incomplete. Sometimes it’s based on another state’s law. Sometimes it doesn’t account for the unique facts that can completely change the answer.

Family Law Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Two custody cases can look almost identical on paper and still have very different outcomes. The same is true for divorce, support, property division, and prenuptial agreements.

AI can explain general legal principles, but it cannot interview witnesses, assess credibility, understand a judge’s preferences, review all of your evidence, or build a litigation strategy around your specific circumstances.

California Law Changes and Every Case Is Different

Family law is constantly evolving through new statutes and court decisions. More importantly, outcomes often depend on facts that never appear in a short prompt. A small detail—such as the wording of a custody order, when an asset was acquired, or the procedural posture of a case—can dramatically affect the legal analysis.

AI Can Be Wrong—And It Won’t Be Standing Next to You in Court

AI systems can make mistakes. They may misunderstand a question, provide incomplete information, or confidently state something that is inaccurate. If that advice hurts your case, the AI won’t appear in court with you or fix the problem.

Your attorney has an ethical duty to represent your interests and give advice tailored to your case. That’s a very different role.

A Better Way to Use AI

I actually encourage clients to use AI in smart ways. Use it to understand legal terminology, organize questions for your attorney, create timelines, summarize documents for your own review, or prepare for meetings.

Then bring those questions to your lawyer so you can receive advice based on California law and the facts of your case.

My No-BS Advice

Use AI as a tool—not as your lawyer.

The internet is full of people looking for quick answers, but there are very few quick answers in family law. Decisions involving your children, your finances, your business, and your future deserve more than a generic response generated from limited information.

Good legal advice isn’t just about knowing the law. It’s about applying the law to your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ChatGPT replace a divorce lawyer?

No. It can provide general information, but it cannot provide legal representation or advice tailored to your case.

Should I use AI before my consultation?

Absolutely. It can help you organize your thoughts and prepare questions, which can make your consultation more productive.

Can I rely on AI to fill out court forms?

Be careful. Court forms have legal consequences, and mistakes can be expensive. If you’re unsure, get legal advice before filing.
